Christening the SV Heiselman
The Charleston District christened its newest survey vessel, the SV Heiselman, with a ceremony to honor her namesake, former employee Gene Heiselman Jr. The Heiselman family was there for the festivities and Heiselman's son christened the boat with a bottle of champagne. The vessel will now serve as the District's main vessel for conducting surveys of smaller projects.

Recently the District hosted two workshops and public hearings on two different proposed projects, Union Pier Terminal and the Navy Base Intermodal Container Transfer Facility.

Lt. Col. Matthew Luzzatto, district commander, and Lt. Col. Nathan Molica, deputy commander, participated in the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce's Principal for a Day program where they shadowed the principals of Wando High School and Cario Middle School to learn about their STEM programs. The principals then spent a day with us.

The Charleston District conducted ship simulations at the Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Miss. The simulations test the conditions of the current design for the Post 45 harbor deepening project to finalize plans for the future of the harbor.

A Look Inside a DLA Warehouse
As part of the Charleston District’s Interagency and International Services program, the District has been completing projects around the country for the Defense Logistics Agency. DLA is the Department of Defense’s largest logistics combat support agency and provides equipment, storage and services in both peace and wartime to military units and civilian agencies. This graphic represents some of the aspects of a DLA warehouse, including the types of things stored inside and examples of work we’ve done.

The St. Stephen Powerhouse recently underwent maintenance for the turbine generators that produce power. Underwater divers were called in to complete the work below the surface of the water.

Bobber the Water Safety Dog appeared at Coast Guard Sector Charleston's National Safe Boating Week kickoff event, where he spread the word to children about wearing their life jackets.
