Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Luzzatto joins the Charleston District as the 86th District Engineer and Commander from his last assignment in Tokyo as the Chief of Host Nation Construction for U.S. Forces Japan.
LTC Luzzatto is from Milton, Vermont. He received his commission as an Engineer Officer in 1997, after graduating with honors from the United States Military Academy.
LTC Luzzatto’s initial assignment was to the 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Group out of Fort Lewis Washington. There he served as a Vertical Construction Platoon Leader, Company XO, and Battalion Construction Officer where he deployed to Kosovo in the spring of 1999. March 2002 he was assigned to the 41st Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Infantry Division (Light) and served as the Battalion Adjutant and then as the Assistant Operations officer during the Battalion’s 2003 deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. LTC Luzzatto then assumed command and redeployed his company to Fort Drum prior to the Battalion’s transformation into the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion. In 2005 he attended Colorado State and earned his Masters Degree in Construction Management prior to joining the Corps of Engineers Honolulu District. There he served as a Project Engineer, Chief of Real Estate, and deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq as the Deputy Area Engineer supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. From June 2010 to June 2012, LTC Luzzatto joined the 15th Engineer Battalion in Schweinfurt, Germany. During the Battalion’s deployment to Kuwait he served as the Operations Officer managing construction operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain supporting Operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom. In 2012 LTC Luzzatto was assigned to U.S. Forces Japan and managed the bilateral coordination of $1.5 billion annually in Government of Japan construction support to U.S. Forces.
His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic Course, Engineer Captain’s Career Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Forces Staff College. His civilian education includes a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy and an M.S. in Construction Management from Colorado State. LTC Luzzatto is also a registered Professional Engineer with the State of Colorado, and is a certified Project Management Professional.
LTC Luzzatto’s military awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, NATO Kosovo Medal, Parachutist Badge, and the Sapper Tab.
