Charleston, SC— This morning, it has been brought to our attention that several people in the John’s Island area have received flyers, claiming to be from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, in their mailboxes stating they are in violation of wetland conservation buffer areas and further violations will be prosecuted. This flyer is NOT official correspondence from the Charleston District and should not be considered as such.

 

The flyer received reportedly includes the following text:

WETLAND CONSERVATION BUFFER AREAS ARE NOT TO BE ENCROACHED UPON.  PLEASE CEASE AND DESIST IMMEDIATELY.  FURTHER VIOLATIONS WILL BE PROSECUTED BY U.S. ARMY CORP. OF ENGINEERING.

After researching the origin of the flyer, it has been determined that it was distributed by an unknown party. This action was not directed by the Charleston District. Please note that any official correspondence regarding Clean Water Act violations would be sent by United States Postal Service via certifiable mail on Department of the Army letterhead.

 

The Charleston District Regulatory Division is committed to protecting the nation’s aquatic resources while allowing reasonable development through fair, flexible and balanced permit decisions.
