PROJECT NAME: MCAS Beaufort Fuel Pier Maintenance Dredging
COUNTY: Beaufort County
WATERWAY & LOCATION: The project is located at the terminus of Geiger Boulevard located in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina, (Latitude: 32.4661°, Longitude: -80.66918°).
PROPOSED WORK: The proposed work consists of conducting dredging to maintain navigation access to the existing fuel pier at MCAS Beaufort. In detail, the applicant has proposed to dredge approximately 34,000 cubic yards of material. The previously authorized depth of the inboard side of pier is -6 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) and the depth of the outboard side of pier is -14 feet MLLW. Approximately 34,000 cubic yards of maintenance material would be dredged every 7 to 10 years (as needed) to maintain the depth of the existing berths. The proposed dredging would be conducted using a mechanical dredge (clamshell), and the dredged material would be placed in a scow and transported approximately 13 miles to an established Dredged Material Management Area (DMMA) located along the Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff, which is used by the Corps to maintain the AIWW. The dredged material would be hydraulically pumped from the scow into the existing DMMA.
